Have a question for the community. I was running with another racer at a 100K a few weeks ago and he was using running poles. We started talking and he stated it helped him with the ascents. I'm asking if trekking poles are useful? I don't want to buy stuff to buy stuff. Does anyone have experience with them and are could they recommend them for racing?

I've used poles in mountain races for years. They definitely help on the ascents, because you can use the power of your whole body more efficiently (think of cross-country skiing). For running, I'd recommend light Z-poles, which can be folded up. For example Black Diamond Distance Carbon Z.
Fantastic! Thanks for the feedback. This helps me a lot.
I will second what Vilppu said. I've used Black Diamond Distance Z poles in both my 100-miler and 100k in the past two years. For very steep ascents they are great. Probably unnecessary for anything under 50-miles. I've read some reports from sports scientists that say unless the grade is very steep that the poles actually make you use more energy but at the same time, for a mid to back of the pack guy like me, they save my legs! I would practice with them some before racing with them because they will use muscles in your back that you typically don't use when running without them. Cheers - Nick
Thanks a bunch.
I also use the BD Distance Z's as do both of my kids. Very easy to break them down and put back in my pack while running.
Alright. So I'm possibly leaning towards poles. Great feedback.
